• Q: Why did ION change the name to ION TTUSB?

  Our newest ION TTUSB model now replaces similar older models that had the same look and features. The new labeling and packaging of the ION TTUSB corresponds with our latest upgraded software including EZ Vinyl.

• Q: When the turntable is connected to my computer, I get no sound, either from Audacity or any of my other programs. Why?

  A: When you first connect the turntable, Windows XP (and Mac OSX) will often select the "USB Audio Codec" as the audio input and output for your entire system. Since your turntable does not have speakers, audio will not be heard from your programs until you tell Windows not to use the turntable as an output device. Here's how to change these settings so that your internal sound card will always be used for playback whether or not your turntable is connected via USB:
  

  For Windows:
  1. On the bottom left of your screen, select the "Start" menu.
  2. Select "Settings" then "Control Panel".
  3. In the window that opens, select the "Sounds and Audio Devices" icon. (If you don't see a choice called "Sounds and Audio Devices," choose the "Switch to Classic View" option in the panel on the left of the window, and the "Sounds and Audio Devices" icon should become available in the list on the left.
  4. Select the "Audio" Tab at the top of the "Sounds and Audio Devices" control panel window.
  5. Under "Sound Playback," choose your internal sound card as the default device. This varies by computer but should not be set to "USB Audio Codec" or "Microsoft Sound Mapper".
  6. Under "Sound Recording," select "USB Audio Codec" for your default device.
  7. Check the box titled "Use only default devices".
  8. Click "Apply"...then "OK".

  
  

  For Mac:
  1. Open your Hard Disk.
  2. Open your "Applications" folder.
  3. In the "Applications" folder, open the "Utilities" folder.
  4. In the "Utilities" folder, open the "Audio MIDI Setup".
  5. In the "Audio MIDI Setup" under Audio Devices, set:
     
     
     • "Default Input" to "USB Audio Codec"
     • "Default Output" to "Built In Audio"
     • "System Output" to "Built in Audio"

  
  Now, all programs, including Audacity, will only use your internal sound card for audio output.
  

• Q: I have selected my computer's sound card for playback, and the "USB Audio Codec" for recording in Audacity's preferences screen, but the turntable's sound is still not playing through my speakers. What now?

  A: All that is left to do is to tell Audacity that you want it to play any sound from the turntable out through your soundcard's speakers. This option is called "Monitor Input." Here's how to find and enable it:
  
  Next to the round playback control buttons you should see the Input and Output meters. They are each labeled with "L" and "R." Underneath the "L" and "R" labels of the input level meter, you will see a small icon that looks like a microphone (see the picture below). To the right of this icon is a black arrow that points downward. Click this arrow, and select "Monitor Input." The input level meters should now be active, and you should hear sound when you play your turntable.
  
  
  

• Q: Do I need to connect the RCA cables from the turntable to my computer? My computer does not have any jacks for RCA connections. What do I do?

  A: The best way to connect your ION TTUSB to your computer is via USB. If you use USB you don't need to connect the RCA cables to your computer. However, you can also connect the turntable via RCA to your home stereo for use without the computer. Home stereo receivers can have two types of analog audio inputs: Line Level and Phono Level. They both use the same standard RCA connection. Line Level inputs are typically labeled "CD, DVD, VCR, AUX, LINE" etc. Phono inputs will always be labeled "Phono." Make sure to select the proper signal level (on the bottom of the ION TTUSB) for the type of stereo input you are using. If you're using USB only, the switch position does not matter.
  

• Q: The turntable is playing too fast...the vocals sound like chipmunks. Is my turntable broken?

  A: This is most often due to a belt that is improperly installed. If the belt slips out of the groove when the turntable is played, and is able to ride up or down on the spindle, the platter will spin too fast. You'll need to adjust the position of the belt on the inner ring of the platter. The inner ring of the platter is quite a bit wider than the belt itself. The belt should wrap around the middle part of the inner ring. If it is wrapped too high or too low around the inner ring, it could cause the other half of the belt to ride up or down on the spindle.
  

  Follow these steps to check the belt for proper alignment:
  1. Remove both the record and the slip mat from the turntable.
  2. Rotate the platter so that you can see the brass motor spindle through one of the holes in the platter (it should be located in the bottom-left corner of the turntable).
  3. Reposition the belt so that it is wrapped around the spindle's groove.

  
  

• Q: I am following the instructions, and the turntable is connected to my computer's USB cable and turned on, but my computer does not recognize the device. In Audacity's preferences screen, there is no "USB Audio Codec" option under default recording. What should I do?

  A: If you are running Windows XP or Mac OSX, everything needed to get the tuentable communicating with the computer is built right into the operating system on your computer. Once you connect the turntable to your computer with the USB cable that came in the box, your computer will recognize it as an audio input device titled "USB Audio Codec." The driver is written by Windows (or Macintosh) and is part of the system.
  

• Q: I am having a hard time finding the "BELT". Did you forget to package one with my turntable?

  A: The "BELT" is actually preinstalled around the large ring on the underside of the turntable platter [please see image below].
  
  If you can not seem to find the belt under the platter...please check thoroughly in the box and other packaging material, as it might have fallen off.
